Primus Canada and Mipps Inc. are conducting WiMAX IEEE 802.16e-2005 (3.5 GHz) trials in Hamilton, ON, using new WiMAX equipment from Alcatel-Lucent.

The WiMAX trial is free for Hamilton residents and small businesses, and is expected to continue into the mid-summer, the participants describe, providing participants with fixed/portable, wireless, high speed internet access almost anywhere within the city.

The IEEE 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard is a more advanced successor to IEEE 802d.16-2004 (called "Static WiMAX"), offering superior performance, functionality and flexibility. Users can enjoy uninterrupted internet applications such as browsing and video streaming, as they move throughout most of the city.

Mipps Inc. (“Mipps”) acquired 3.5 GHz licensed spectrum covering the Hamilton area as well as similar spectrum in most major cities across Canada. Mipps is building the WiMAX network infrastructure in Hamilton and the companies will collaborate and share knowledge and expertise gained through the trial.

“Primus Canada’s trial of the latest WiMAX technology, in partnership with Mipps, is another example of our dedication to providing Canadians with leading-edge services and features,” said Ted Chislett, President of Primus Canada, in a release. “Hamilton, being a key market for Primus, represents an ideal test-market for this initiative, which could lead to a roll-out in other centres across Canada in the coming months."

“As a wireless network operator, and given the potential for WiMAX to become a widely embraced technology in Canada, we are pleased to evaluate and explore the WiMAX IEEE 802.16e capabilities with a leading supplier such as Alcatel-Lucent, and to exploit the possibilities of new services with Primus Canada’s innovative offerings,’’ added Joe Boutros, President of Mipps.

WiMAX is described as a broadband wireless access technology that enables connectivity through wireless networks for fixed, nomadic or mobile use in urban, suburban and rural areas. The technology offers a cost-effective broadband access alternative where DSL is unavailable for technical or economical reasons, or a last-mile alternative to unbundling for operators who are offering a combination of voice and broadband access for next generation of wireless devices.

Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. offers facilities-based voice, data, e-commerce, Web hosting, VoIP and broadband Internet services utilizing ADSL2+ technology. Primus Canada is a wholly-owned subsidiary of McLean, Virginia-based PRIMUS Telecommunications Group, Incorporated (OTCBB: PRTL).

Mipps Inc. is a Canadian wireless operator and has acquired 3.5 GHz licensed spectrum in 40 licensed areas covering most major cities and towns across Canada potentially serving over 15 million in population. In addition to supplying its customers with wireless broadband service at speeds ranging from T1 through to an unprecedented 480Mbps, Mipps provides a host of other comprehensive Internet related services.

Alcatel-Lucent provides fixed, mobile and converged broadband networking, IP technologies, applications, and services.
