WiMAX Wireless Network to be Deployed in Montreal
TEXT SIZE

Montreal will soon deliver wireless Internet and mobile IP telephony to residents. A new WiMAX based Wi-Fi network is being deployed across the
metropolitan area, as a result of a joint venture between two Quebec-based
businesses: independent Internet service provider Radioactif.com and Nomade Télécom, wireless network installer and operator.
The new wireless services will be made available first to residents of Montreal's Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood. By 2009, the network will expand to blanket nearly 300 square kilometres of Montreal servicing approximately 90% of residents, the companies describe. It will provide an affordable alternative to the oligopoly maintained by companies currently providing telephone, cellular and Internet
service.
For less than $30 per month, Montreal residents will soon be able to have wireless Internet access and IP telephone service almost everywhere on the island," explained Daniel Robichaud, President of radioactif.com, in a release. "Wireless telephony, including voice mail, call waiting and free local calling will be available across the network with no per minute charge, except in the case of long distance calls," he concluded.
The network will enable Internet access at speeds of up to 5 Mbps, more than fast enough for most users' needs. This speed, comparable to current offerings from high speed cable and DSL providers, is possible thanks to the WiMAX-powered back-end of the network.
Once deployment across Montreal is complete, the partners will expand their network to the North and South shores of the city. Plans are also in place to develop networks for Quebec City, Halifax, Toronto, Windsor, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.
Radioactif.com provides an independent portal and independent high-speed Internet service.
Founded in 2005, Nomade Télécom Inc. is a company specializing in network
consultation, design, development, installation and operation.
