New Video Digital is expanding its digital library of independent films and documentaries through new and existing partnerships with Arthouse Films, B-Side Entertainment, Brave New Films, Peace Arch Entertainment and Plexifilm.

With these partnerships, New Video Digital’s offering has grown to over 2,200 movies and 6,800 hours of television.  NVD’s John Squires notes that approximately 70 per cent of the company catalog is available in Canada. “We typically acquire Canadian rights when [they’re] available,” he told Mediacaster Magazine.

As an independent digital video distributor, the company offers access to various download and streaming platforms like iTunes, Hulu, YouTube, Netflix Xbox and Amazon providing new and unique opportunities for independents to reach the audience in a competitive marketplace.

“We’re at an interesting place and time as far as how people consume content online. It’s amazing to witness the upward shift in demand,” explained NVD President Steve Savage.  “We’re excited to add these quality titles to our digital film library and offer alternative programming to a much broader and more tech-savvy audience.”

New Video Digital’s recent acquisitions include:

  • “JCVD” (Peace Arch Entertainment) – An action-packed comedic satire of the life of movie hero Jean-Claude Van Damme (“Bloodsport,” “Universal Soldier”).  Playing himself self-deprecatingly, Jean-Claude finds himself out of money, fighting for custody of his daughter and losing every good action role to Steven Seagal.  But when he is thrown into a real-life hostage situation, everyone sees a side of Van Damme they’ve never seen before as he takes on the police, battles the perpetrators and creates a media firestorm that captures the attention of the world. Toronto Film Festival Official Selection.

  •  “The Mysteries of Pittsburgh” (Peace Arch Entertainment) - From the producer of Sideways and based on the best selling novel.  The film is set in Pittsburgh in the early eighties, and chronicles the last true summer of Art Bechstein's (JON FOSTER) youth. Stuck in a dead-end job working for his eccentric sometime girlfriend Phlox (MENA SUVARI), and forced into an endless series of airless dinners with his mobster father (NICK NOLTE), Art begins to believe that perhaps he doesn't even exist at all. Also starring Sienna Miller and Peter Sarsgaard.  Sundance Film Festival Official Selection.

  • Lying” (Arthouse Films) with Chloe Sevigny, Jenna Malone & Leelee Sobieski – When a long weekend brings four women together in the countryside, each of them is forced to navigate the depths of social interaction as virtual strangers. How well do we really know the friends we make in adulthood? And in an age of lies, what can be made of a person who tells untruths so small they serve no obvious purpose? A Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight Film.

  • “Objectified” (Plexifilm) - A feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. Director Gary Hustwit (Helvetica) looks at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets, profiling the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives.

  • “MoveOn: The Movie” (Brave New Films and Yalla Films) - A feature-length documentary focusing on the revolutionary history of the biggest progressive grass-roots movement seen in the United States since the 1960s. This film stands as a vivid testimony to times of radical social change in our nation and to the power of people banding together for change.

  • “Visioneers” (B-Side Entertainment) - Starring comedian Zach Galifianakis (“The Hangover,” “G-force”), the film is a dark comedy set in a futuristic corporation in which employees are known to spontaneously combust from stress.  D.W.
