MoboVivo, the Calgary-based portable media solutions company, has unveiled its latest new software that repurposes and distributes video to different computing platforms and devices, enabling broadcasters to distribute TV shows on mobile phones, laptops and set-top boxes.

MoboVivo is collaborating with Cybera, the Grid Research Centre, and the University of Calgary to develop tools for the distribution of video to mobile phones, computers and set-top boxes and portable devices like

iPods Nintendo Wii, XBox, iPhone and Sony PSP, so that consumers can take TV with them.

The company has also announced platform compatibility with the Palm Pre, and says it has begun distribution of premium TV shows to Pre users.

Trevor Doerksen, MoboVivo's founder and CEO, said, "Our solutions are already taking video and cloud computing middleware to a rapidly growing new media market."

The company has been developing what it calls Rapid Repurposing Technology (RRT) to meet the media and content demands of current and future devices and platforms; now, its latest software has been unveiled at the Summit '09 Cloud Computing Challenge in Banff, AB.

In addition to companies like MoboVivo, Cybera works with the Government of Alberta, other public and private Alberta organizations and interprovincial and federal partners to ensure Alberta’s competitiveness in advanced technologies. Cybera manages CyberaNet, a high performance network that connects Alberta to CANARIE, Canada’s national Canada’s national research network.

Cybera acts as the prime contractor for management of WestGrid, a consortium that provides advanced computing for research to universities in Western Canada.

“Producers and broadcasters need a plan to distribute content online and for mobile," said Doerksen. "We're working with our partners to give consumers new ways to watch and share their favourite shows."
