Residents and businesses in the northwest Calgary community of Hawkwood, AB, are among the first in Canada to receive free community-wide wireless access and related content services, following deployment of a new wireless mesh network.

Every community resident and business using the network can get Internet services, as well as access to a community portal site, with community-specific news, events and local advertising.

GoNaeco's community portal sites provide the ad opportunites to local businesses, and cross-platfform support via a monthly newsletter that the service distributes to all registered network users.

Strix Systems, a wireless mesh technology products and solutions provider, along with Naeco Communications Inc. (the parent company of GoNaeco), rolled out the new service in the northwest quadrant of Calgary. In addition, GoNaeco has also secured approval from neighbouring communities to further deploy these community network utilities.

The low latency network is said to support real time voice, video, and mobility and data applications.

"Strix Access/One solutions are the industry's top performing wireless mesh solution with the intelligence to self-heal, self-tune and self-configure. We're excited that GoNaeco has experienced the power, versatility and reliability of our wireless mesh network solution," said Martin Levetin, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Strix Systems.

"Strix Systems solutions have enabled us to develop as a strong high-value brand. We are very happy with the performance and reliability of Strix Systems equipment and services. With the support of Strix's technical support team and the experience of Brella Wireless, Hawkwood Community Network deployment was a success. We are considering further to bridge the digital divide in rural Canada with this state-of-the-art technology," said Ben Yan, CEO of Naeco Communications Inc.

GoNaeco used Strix Systems' award winning OWS (Outdoor Wireless System) to unwire the Calgary Community. Access/One Outdoor Wireless System OWS2400 is the industry's highest throughput, lowest latency modular multi-radio mesh networking system. Utilizing Strix DMA (Dynamic Mesh Algorithms), the Access/One OWS delivers multi-radio Layer 2 switching, multi-RF (4.9/5/2.4 GHz) and multi-channel capabilities using advanced algorithms to deliver high throughput over multiple hops from the core to the edge of the network.

The OWS intelligently self-tunes, self-configures and self-heals to optimize the overall performance and availability. RF Channels are selected dynamically, making the network more resilient to interference than other mesh solutions.

Calgary-based Naeco Communications Inc., founded in 2007 by Alain Dubreuil, completed its first network deployment in 2005 working with sister company, Brella Wireless Inc. Naeco has the exclusive rights of Brella Wireless technologies and methodologies for Alberta. Naeco has signed contracts with the City of Calgary and the City of Airdrie to secure the rights to deploy community-wide wireless networks.

Sounds like an excellent idea! Where have we heard this before? Local news, information and advertising content, apprpriate for and delivered to the community by a service provider, which also has premium or value add business offerings feeding its business model.
