Manitoba-based telecom provider Allstream reports its national IP fibre network is continuing to bring solid returns with 46 new contracts won in the second quarter.

Among its declared new IP fibre network customers are companies such as Moblicity, XO Communications, Frontline Technologies, and Design Group Staffing Inc.

"The capabilities of our Allstream IP fibre network are significant and this expansion is allowing us to reach more customers in a cost-effective fashion. Based on the long sales cycles of the Enterprise market, these sales should positively support our 2011 IP plans," said Dean Prevost, President, Allstream. "The success of this investment is based on a very focused approach that reflects the strengths of Allstream's IP product suite and will enhance our on-net customer presence. We are excited by the success we are seeing so far, which reflects strong IP services needs by customers in our markets."

At the end of the second quarter,  Allstream reports it has earned 54 new IP contracts through this initiative, including multiple sales in the same connected buildings as well as a further 35 wins in Allstream's collocation footprint.

Business unit MTS, meanwhile, has started the deployment of its brand new fibre optic network "FiON" in the City of Selkirk.

The company has successfully started the transfer of telephone and Internet customers on to the new fibre optic network and the Company is on track to migrate 2,200 subscribers in Selkirk to FiON by the end of the year.

"We are making good progress in the deployment of our new fibre to the home network in the City of Selkirk," said Kelvin Shepherd, President, MTS. "FiON will provide excellent support for our current services and lays the groundwork for delivering future services over one of the most advanced network technologies in Canada."

Customers on this new network will have access to the most advanced consumer telecommunications services that MTS offers today, including local telephone service and high-speed Internet services with speeds up to 25 Mbps, with potential for future speeds of over 100 Mbps. MTS also plans later this year to launch MTS Ultimate TV to customers served by FiON.

MTS and Allstream are business units of MTS Allstream Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Manitoba Telecom Services Inc.
