New tools for real-time ID and frame-accurate sync between live, on-demand or recorded TV content and interactive applications on second screen companion devices is opening up delivery of companion content for an increasing number of broadcasters and media providers.
And those tools are driving a new partnership between Canadian developer Mobovivo and Dutch technology company Civolution.
Mobovivo will use Civolution’s SyncNow automatic content recognition (ACR) technology to trigger second screen content on tablets, smart phones and laptops, and to deliver immersive, interactive experiences to the viewer and user.
Civolution and Mobovivo are creating and delivering branded apps that synchronize with on-air content in real-time, such as the award-winning AXS TV second screen Fights App that lets viewers play along with both live and time-shifted MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) broadcasts.
While live sports may be a particular focus, the degree to which digital device multitasking is becoming a norm among those who own a connected or smart device and watch television simultaneously extends the option to drama, comedy and other programming.
“We’re very excited to see our audio ACR solution selected as the sync technology of choice for Mobovivo,” said Alex Terpstra, CEO, Civolution. “Mobovivo already delivers compelling user interfaces for its branded applications, and the integration of our ACR technology to activate broadcast sync and content triggering within those interfaces will take the overall user experience to even greater heights.”
The companies also say they will leverage the new partnership for additional mobile apps within the Mobovivo second screen app portfolio, as well as an international television series and a global sporting event.
“When we looked into adding audio sync to our applications, Civolution emerged as the clear choice due to its scalability and ease-of-integration,” said Trevor Doerksen, Founder & CEO, Mobovivo. “Civolution’s SyncNow ACR solution will allow us to push innovation in the 2nd screen space even further, and foster increased levels of engagement between television viewers and our brand partners.”
Mobovivo has already released over 100 entertainment content-related apps for customers such as eOne Entertainment, Alliance Films, and Astral Media; the Calgary-based company is also integrating in-stadium smartphone photos, videos, and social interaction with live sports programming, both at home and in the stadium.
With headquarters in the Netherlands, and offices worldwide, Civolution is already supporting second screen consumer applications for movie and show producers, broadcasters, platform providers and advertisers worldwide.
