CTV Set to Stream Super Bowl

Super Bowl XLVII will be streamed live in Canada, CTV has confirmed.

This Sunday’s NFL championship match will be available online, free of charge, at ctv.ca.

The game’s national broadcaster says that, along with its live game stream, it has developed some digital companion features for the event, including up-to-the-minute game statistics, a live chat, and other interactive elements accessible online and via mobile devices.

CTV’s Super Bowl XLVII programming will be featured across its multi-media platforms, including sports specialty service TSN and its French counterpart, RDA; TSN Radio and TEAM Radio stations across the country and it will be offered exclusively as part of the Bell Mobile TV service.

Rights rules and regulations mean CTV’s TV and online Super Bowl coverage will be geo-blocked.

Super Bowl coverage in Canada often leads to frustration, criticism and even regulatory discipline. Access to special U.S. commercials during half time is one issue, and some carriers have tried to find ways around the blocking in the past.

As well, digital media carriage and mobile delivery of the game here in Canada has been a sore spot.

In 2011, for example, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ruled that Bell and Bell Mobility gave itself undue preference in handling exclusive Super Bowl coverage when it excluded other carriers from the same coverage. TELUS had filed a complaint to that effect, and the country’s broadcast and telecom regulator said Bell's actions put its competitor to undue disadvantage by restricting carriage of the game.

And while there will again be no direct viewing of those often highly-touted U.S. Super Bowl commercials, there are broadcast plans to air exclusive ads in Canada, along with special announcements from CTV about its upcoming programming and entertainment specials.

“CTV is thrilled to give football fans another way to experience the Super Bowl,” said Phil King, President, CTV Programming and Sports. “This complementary coverage ensures Canadians won’t miss a second of the action.”

Super Bowl XLVII takes place on Sunday, Feb. 3, in New Orleans, La.
