IPTV media provider Boxee plans to release a Live TV service that adds to its Internet-based media offerings.
Initially available in the U.S. and Canada, Boxee Live TV is a new add-on to the Boxee Box that will come out in January, the company describes on its blog. A Live TV dongle connects an antenna to a Boxee Box and home TV to receive over-the-air signals in HD.
Boxee Live TV will support unencrypted cable channels, and coax cable can be connected to the device for access to compatible clearQAM basic cable channel services.
The company says services like as Hulu Plus, Netflix, VUDU, MUBI, and OpenFilm, and other OTT (over-the-top) and Internet content is already available.
The Boxee platform also automatically delivers video recommendations to the TV from friends on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Boxee Live TV is to be released in January, 2012.
