A new transmedia training and development program is looking at the future of funny, and it will support the production of next-generation digital media comedy content.
The program is set to launch next January at Ryerson University; the new School of Bite (S.o.B.) is a joint initiative among specialty channel BiteTV, Ryerson’s RTA School of Media, the RTA Transmedia Centre, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) and the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund.
S.o.B. is described an experimental initiative on the future of media, intending to help creative individuals and teams that are producing new media programming and comedic multi-platform content.
The RTA S.o.B. program will provide 10 participants with support, mentoring, funding, technical expertise and production resources via Blue Ant Media (BiteTV’s parent company) and the RTA School of Media.
Initially, the group will generate ideas in content and delivery with the intention of finding new ways to reach modern audiences using comedy. The group will evolve into something akin to a production company with the RTA S.o.B. serving an “incubator” function. S.o.B. is looking to produce five well-developed ideas to a point where they can be “field tested”, a process that can include marketing and promotional activities, delivery and distribution through appropriate media channels, some or all of which may be supplied by BiteTV.
Program information and prototype projects will be featured on BiteTV’s S.o.B. web page as well as through RTA’s Transmedia Centre site.
“Bite TV has always been committed to discovering up-and-coming comedic talent and next generation content in Canada,” said Jeffrey Elliott, Bite TV Founder and RTA S.o.B. Co-Director. “Together with Ryerson, we can collectively nurture this talent, developing content to set the stage for their comedic success in this new multi-platform media landscape.”
“Ryerson is delighted to work with Bite TV on this innovative and unique program for those interested in the comedy genre,” said Charles Falzon, RTA School of Media Chair and RTA S.o.B. Co-Director, Ryerson University. “The RTA School of Media is a leader in new media and is always looking for original ways to engage audiences across new and emerging platforms.”
The deadline to submit applications for the new program is Friday, November 16, 2012.
