VividTV Names Canadian Business Chief

Veteran television executive Stephen E. Walter has been named as Senior Vice President of Business Development for Canada and Europe for VividTV, the multichannel television division of Vivid Entertainment, a leading global adult film company.

"Steve is an 18-year affiliate sales and marketing veteran who has built strong relationships with platform operators in Canada and Europe and has been successfully helping them maximize the revenue from their adult pay TV category,” said VividTV President Ken Boenish in announcing Walter’s appointment. “He’s the ideal person to advance VividTV’s presence in these key markets."

VividTV was launched last August and has quickly become the fastest growing adult service, currently delivering its branded video-on-demand offerings and linear pay TV channel to more than 25 million homes.

“I’m delighted to be working with a brand that is so respected in its field. VividTV truly represents a unique content offering, has strong international recognition and is constantly covered by the mainstream media for being the industry experts regarding adult entertainment,”  Walter said.

Most recently Walter served as Vice President of Business Development for New Frontier Media, Inc., a content distributor with global activities. He established the NOOF European and Canadian distribution divisions and created strategic partnerships with many of the world’s largest international media companies.

Lacavera to Step Down as WIND CEO

Orascom Telecom Holding S.A.E. and WIND Mobile’s founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Anthony Lacavera, have entered into an agreement to transfer Lacavera’s shares of WIND Mobile Canada to Orascom.

Lacavera says he plans to launch a new initiative, Globalive Capital in 2013, but he will remain WIND Mobile’s Chairman and CEO until the deal closes.

Then, his plans are to continue in a non-operational capacity as WIND Mobile Canada’s Honourary Chair.

“As an entrepreneur, my vision was to ignite change across the wireless landscape in Canada, bringing more competition, better prices and superior service to Canadians,” said Lacavera. “And that is exactly what we did. Now that I am confident WIND Mobile Canada is on a course for long-term success, I can focus on launching Globalive Capital to make targeted investments in companies that share my entrepreneurial vision and continue to support innovation through new and emerging entrepreneurs.”

Lacavera founded WIND Mobile in Canada in 2008. Partnering with Orascom (now majority owned by VimpelCom Ltd.), WIND Mobile acquired spectrum in the 2008 wireless auction and launched what is now Canada’s fourth largest wireless carrier. Since that time, WIND Mobile has launched in Southern Ontario (including Toronto), Ottawa, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton and now serves 600,000 subscribers.

Upon closing, Orascom will own an indirect 99.3% interest in Globalive Wireless Management Corp.

Under the terms of the signed agreement, upon obtaining certain necessary regulatory approvals, Orascom will indirectly acquire all of AAL Corp.’s interest in Globalive Wireless Management Corp., which operates under the WIND Mobile brand in Canada. AAL Corp. is a holding company that is majority-owned by Anthony Lacavera. As part of the consideration to be paid to AAL Corp. (which includes cash consideration and a continuing economic participation in WIND Mobile for AAL Corp.), the Globalive group’s fixed-line assets (including the Globalive name and trademark) will be transferred to AAL Corp.

“Anthony Lacavera has been the face and the voice of WIND Mobile Canada,“ said Ahmed Abou Doma, Chief Executive Officer of Orascom, in a release. “I wish to pay tribute to his leadership in making WIND Mobile the official alternative to the ‘Big Three’ incumbents in Canada.”

Completion of the transactions is subject to satisfaction of certain conditions, including Canadian regulatory approval of the conversion of Orascom’s non-voting shares into voting shares, which would result in Orascom holding an indirect 65.1% voting and economic interest in Globalive Wireless Management Corp. immediately before completion of the transactions with AAL Corp. Orascom currently holds an indirect 32% voting interest and 65.1% economic interest in WIND Mobile Canada. AAL Corp. currently holds an indirect 66.7% voting interest and 34.3% economic interest.

IABC/Toronto Names 2012 Communicator of the Year

Jim Grieve is IABC/Toronto's 2012 Communicator of the Year

Grieve is the Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Ministry of Education, a role that affects more than two million students and their families across the province. IABC/Toronto presents the award annually to a GTA-based communicator who demonstrates exceptional leadership, management and communications skills.

This year's awards ceremony will be held on March 7th.

"Jim possesses those special qualities we look for in our Communicator of the Year winners," said Janet Comeau, ABC, who chaired the judging panel. "He believes in the power of communication and works with his team to be as strategic as possible in delivering his message and achieving outcomes."

Among Grieve's communications successes is the successful, ongoing roll-out of full-day kindergarten programs across Ontario. He took on this assignment during a bleak, economic recession when many critics deemed the program too expensive. Using the power of face-to-face communication, Jim built the support, trust and relationships needed to convince stakeholders, parents and educators of the program's benefits. Over the past three years, Jim has communicated the same strong, consistent message citing a proven return on investment for every dollar spent on early learning. Despite severe fiscal pressure, the program was spared funding cuts in the 2012 budget and is one of the most popular government programs with enrolment remarkably higher than expected.

Not content to stay behind the scenes, Jim is in schools and child care centres speaking to educational partners and visiting communities across Ontario at least once a week and insists that all members of his staff do the same.

"Our judges were impressed by Jim's personal touch and passionate advocacy for the future of children," added Linda Andross, ABC, president, IABC/Toronto. "His commitment to gathering their input and delivering warm and authentic messaging in person, says a lot about his character in this age of electronic communication."

Advanced Opens New AV, IT Showcase Office

Leading AV and IT integrator Advanced Inc. has opened a new state-of-the-art Toronto office to demonstrate the latest SMART Technologies’ business solutions for current and prospective customers.

The new office is located in tat Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto.

ScreenScape Names CTO

ScreenScape Networks Inc. has appointed Ken Schneider as its chief technology officer. Prior to joining ScreenScape, Schneider spent six years at Research In Motion (RIM) in a variety of senior roles, including being responsible for overall system architecture of the BlackBerry solution.

"In Ken, we have hired a hands-on CTO with the skill and experience necessary to strengthen the company through our current growth phase," said Mark Hemphill, founder and CEO ofScreenScape, which has headquarters in Oakville, Ontario, and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Videotron, OSMO Support Tech Innovators

Videotron and the OSMO Foundation have formed a major partnership to support the Notman House project.

As founding partner, Videotron has pledged $2.5 M to back the creation of a hub of technological innovation and enterprise in Montréal. Helping young entrepreneurs express their talent is very much in keeping with Quebecor's traditions.

"This is a big day for Notman House," said Alan MacIntosh, President of the OSMO Foundation. "Videotron's significant support will give entrepreneurship in Montréal a major boost, helping an entire community achieve its full potential and giving some of its amazingly talented members a chance to shine."

Videotron already has plans to support the Notman House community in a number of ways: serving as a bridge between local developers and Videotron's major partners, providing special access to practices developed by its engineering and product development teams, organizing exchanges with Videotron's Android and Web experts, and testing the feasibility of some projects.

The Notman House project will really get off the ground in the summer of 2013.

The OSMO Foundation, a non-profit entity, was established in July 2009 to fund, by way of grants, grassroots initiatives that support community building and networking.The Foundation was created by investors, technology and media executives and the community itself to support the growth and development of Montreal’s next generation of technology entrepreneurs.

IDC Inks Digital Cinema Deal

International Datacasting Corporation is reporting a new contract with a leading European digital cinema distributor, valued in excess of USD $650,000 for the expansion of their network.

The contract includes IDC's SuperFlex Pro Video receivers and Datacast XD head end solutions, which will enable the satellite distribution of digital movie content and alternative live event content to cinemas across Europe in both 2D and 3D formats. It is estimated that over 50% of European cinema screens are now capable of digital projection. Forecasts indicate that by 2015, the market will be nearly 100% digital.

"We are proud to work with this premiere European team in the expansion of their digital cinema network," stated Del Lippert, IDC's Interim CEO and Chairman. "IDC's SuperFlex Pro Video solutions offer the most reliable and advanced distribution of large Digital Cinema Packet files in both 2D and 3D, providing optimal efficiencies and revenue generating opportunities for European digital cinema operators."

IDC's technology not only enhances the reliability of movie content distribution via satellite, but also improves the distribution of live alternative content, including 3D live events, to cinemas. This allows an enhanced audience experience, increasing consumer demand for watching cultural and sporting events in cinemas. Theatre owners are able to maximize revenue streams, while minimizing content distribution costs. Cinemas can now enhance their alternative content choice, thereby expanding their audience reach.
