Pelmorex Media Names Ex-Yahoo Exec as SVP, Global Ad Sales

Paula Presley has been named Senior Vice President of Global Advertising Sales at Pelmorex Media, parent company of The Weather Network, MétéoMédia, Travelers Network, Beat the Traffic and ElTiempo.es.

With more than 21 years of media experience, the former Yahoo! Canada executive is charged with leading all aspects of Pelmorex’s global sales revenue generation as the company continues to expand in key markets across North America and Europe, including revenue management, trading technology and the sales force in each market.

Late last year, Pelmorex expanded its global presence with the acquisition of ElTiemp.es, Spain’s leading multi-platform weather information service. The acquisition marked Pelmorex’s first venture in a European market, following the steady expansion of the business in Canada and the U.S.

“As Pelmorex looks to expand its business even further outside Canadian borders, Paula will play an instrumental role in the execution of our global business and sales strategy,” said Amanda Ploughman, Chief Marketing Officer at Pelmorex. “With a strong background in digital and broadcast sales, Paula brings a wealth of experience that will ensure Pelmorex continues to grow its sales revenue in Canada and abroad.”

Presley has served as Director of National Sales for CBC Television and most recently as Head of Sales at Yahoo! Canada, where she developed revolutionary solutions to her client’s unique sales market strategies. She is an active member of the advertising community, having sat on numerous industry boards including the Broadcast Executive Society, the National Advertising Benevolent Society and currently IAB Canada.

QMI Content Names SVP

France Lauzière is the new Senior Vice-President of QMI Content, a new business division that brings together the creative forces of the subsidiaries of Quebecor Media, including Videotron and TVA.

Lauzière is also Vice-President, Programming, at the TVA Group.

QMI Content is mandated to create, develop, acquire, distribute and export audiovisual content.

"The media habits of consumers are continuing to evolve. To remain relevant and continue on the path of success, we have to adjust to the needs and interests of our clients across all distribution platforms," said the President and CEO of Quebecor Media, Pierre Karl Péladeau, in making the announcement. "We are thrilled to benefit from the experience and talent that France has committed to our group for so many years, and she has my utmost confidence to carry out the implementation of QMI Content."

"Quebecor Media has once again demonstrated its vision by creating this division. QMI Content offers an ideal framework to reflect and meet the constantly growing needs of customers for content, as it is a great platform to host and promote the work of Quebec artists. New Vice President, Business Development, Digital Solutions at TC Media

Martin Longchamps is the new Vice President, Business Development, Digital Solutions for TC Media. He will remain in his current position of Vice President, Mergers and Acquisitions for TC Transcontinental. The appointment is effective immediately.

Longchamps will provide strategic leadership for all business development agreements in the Digital Solutions group, including digital advertising representation, content, traffic acquisition and other agreements.

“Martin has made a huge contribution to the development and transformation of TC Transcontinental since he joined us in June 2010. He has directed a number of transactions, some of them major indeed, such as Quad/Graphics Canada inc. and Redux Media. The acquisition of a majority stake in Redux Media, a leading online advertising network, was a turning point for TC Media Digital Solutions. We have changed a great deal in the past 24 months and Martin will help us maintain that momentum,” said Bruno Leclaire, Senior Vice President, Digital Solutions.

Before joining TC Transcontinental, Longchamps was a Partner, Equity Fund, of Edgestone Capital Partners, a private equity firm. In this position, he handled many small- and mid-cap mergers and acquisitions, held a number of management positions and sat or was an observer on the boards of several companies, including Eurospec Manufacturing, Custom Direct, BreconRidge Corporation and Mitel Networks. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University.

MIKE Welcomes Mose

Mose Persico, long time CTV contributor and well-known English chronicler of the Montreal cultural scene, will turn to 105.1 MIKE FM radio with daily appearances on Tasso Patsikakis' popular drive home, leading up to Mose's World, Persico's own 30 minutes culture and entertainment show.

Persico made his debut on the weekly show in early February.

From 2001 to 2008, he was the cultural voice of CTV as co-host of Entertainment Spotlight, a half-hour television show, covering a potpourri of entertainment related news, from lifestyle to fashion, leisure, music and food. Viewers will still be able to follow Mose at the Movies, Persico’s popular weekly film capsules, as well as his Sunday night movie segment on CTV.

Persico's new MIKE FM show and drive-home segments includes local and international entertainment news, and his trademark mix of blockbuster events and intimate, yet equally relevant, Montreal stories.

Born in Sorrento, Naples, Persico immigrated to Canada in 1965 aboard the ship Cristoforo Colombo with his parents and two sisters. He is a graduate of Cardinal Newman High School, Champlain Regional College, and Concordia University, where he received a BA in Communication Studies with a minor in Broadcast Journalism.

BlackBerry Adds Telecom Execs to Board of Directors

BlackBerry has appointed two new Directors to the company's Board - Richard "Dick" Lynch, retired Executive Vice President of Verizon Communications Inc. and Bert Nordberg, former Chief Executive Officer of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.

Commenting on their appointment, Board Chair Barbara Stymiest said, "We are very pleased to add the talent and industry knowledge of these two respected executives to our Board. We are looking forward to their contributions as we continue to drive for long-term shareholder value and seek opportunities to leverage the extraordinary BlackBerry 10 platform launched last week."

The company now has a Board that consists of 12 members; 10 are independent members including an independent chair.

Richard "Dick" Lynch is president of FB Associates, LLC, which provides advisory and consulting services at the intersection of technology, marketing, and business operations. Prior to his current roles, Lynch had been the EVP & Chief Technology Officer for Verizon Communications Inc. since 2007 and the EVP & CTO of Verizon Wireless and its predecessors since 1990.

Lynch is a Fellow of The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has sat on the boards of numerous industry organizations including the GSM Association (GSMA), the CDMA Development Group (CDG), and as a member of the Federal Communications Commission Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and Communications Security Reliability and Interoperability Council (CSRIC). Lynch has also been honoured with the President's Award by the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA), and been inducted into the Wireless History Foundation's Hall of Fame. Lynch currently serves on the boards of TranSwitch Corporation where he is chairman and Ruckus Wireless.

Lynch is a graduate of Lowell Technological Institute (now University of Massachusetts) where he received bachelors and masters degrees in electrical engineering (1970 and 1972 respectively). He has also completed post graduate work at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University.

Bert Nordberg is Chairman of Vestas Wind Systems, A/S (Denmark) and director on the Board of Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) (Sweden). Additionally, Nordberg serves as director on the Board of Kcell Joint Stock Company (Kazakhstan) and as a representative for the Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Southern Sweden and as a Member of the Hewlett Packard Communications, Media & Entertainment Board of Industry Advisors (USA).

Nordberg was Chairman of Sony Mobile from May-December 2012. He was President & CEO of Sony Ericsson from October 2009-May 2012. While at Ericsson, Nordberg held many senior positions including Executive Vice President, Ericsson Group and Head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, based in California, USA.

Nordberg received degrees in Electronic Engineering from Malmo Tekniska Laroverk in 1978 and as Engineer in the Swedish Marines from Berga, Sweden, in 1980. He has complemented these degrees with courses in International Management and Marketing and Finance at INSEAD University, France.

The legal name of the company has not changed, but Research In Motion will do business as BlackBerry until shareholders vote for the official change at its Annual General Meeting later in 2013. www.blackberry.com.

New Director General of NFB English Takes Over

Ravida Din has taken over her new duties as Director General of the NFB’s English Program, a role she describes as “transformative” and “a great privilege.

“Everything we do at the NFB is a public act,” Din said, “and it is this commitment to engaging with audiences in Canada and abroad that is unwavering. As we move forward with the launch of a new Strategic Plan, I see nothing but tremendous opportunities in creating and distributing media that: profoundly impacts issues of social justice, influences that nexus of innovation, auteur voice and artistic excellence, and embraces the breathtaking pace of the digital revolution that will take us to new levels of social interaction.”

As an executive producer and producer at the NFB since 2007, Din has also worked as a project manager for the Canadian Council for Multicultural and Intercultural Education and as the Executive Director of the National Organization of Immigrant and Visible Minority Women

“I have worked with Ravida for many years and have always been impressed by her fierce intelligence and passionate engagement with creators and the creative process,” said Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB). “Among the excellent candidates interviewed for the position, Ravida stood out for her strategic vision and her ability to understand the complex issues the NFB will be facing in the coming years. Ace Analyst Added to Online, Radio Coverage

Welcome back, Jack.

Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Jack Morris returns to the city where he won two World Series titles as Sportsnet’s newest Blue Jays analyst.

He will provide commentary and insight for Sportsnet 590 The Fan radio broadcasts, and will also make appearances on Sportsnet’s Blue Jays game telecasts, Blue Jays Central, Blue Jays Central at Noon and online at sportnet.ca.

Best known in his playing days for his devastating forkball, the right-handed pitcher and five-time All-Star will forever be known to Blue Jays fans as the first 20-game winner in club history (21 wins) and for propelling his team into the playoffs for the first of their back-to-back World Series Championships in 1992 and 1993. Morris retired in 1995 and has spent time as a colour analyst for the Minnesota Twins and as well as a guest on Detroit Tigers broadcasts.

“I’m thrilled to be joining the Sportsnet team and to be returning to Canada,” said Morris. “I’ve had a lot of great experiences here and am looking forward to this next chapter. This has been one of the most exciting off-seasons that Blue Jays fans have ever seen, and I’m honoured to have the opportunity to be covering this amazing team for the next three years.”
