Shaw Media has received approval from the Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for the launch of its all-news specialty channel in British Columbia.
The new channel, to be called Global News: BC 1 will now launch in early in the New Year, Shaw says; when first announced, a summer launch was expected.
Construction efforts for at Global BC’s Burnaby studio are underway, with plans to integrate elements of social media and other online tools into the way the station’s anchors and reporters deliver the news to the province.
The news network will have an on-air, online and mobile media presence, and will cover the top local and regional stories from around British Columbia, as well as national and international coverage delivered from a distinctly BC perspective.
“This is huge step towards providing BC residents with a 24-hour news channel from the province’s most watched news brand,” Troy Reeb, Senior Vice-President, News and Station Operations, Shaw Media, said in a statement announcing the CRTC approval. “Global News: BC 1 represents our continued dedication to building a news powerhouse by servicing viewers with compelling programming and personalities.”
More details about the Global BC all-news specialty channel will be announced in the coming months.
