hmv Canada has launched a new digital subscription-based streaming service on both Web and mobile devices.

Known as The Vault, it’s been in the works for several months, with development, testing and rights acquisition activities.

HMV reports millions of tracks are available in a library that’s growing constantly, offering unlimited access at one fixed monthly rate for PC access, or for both Web and mobile devices at a higher fee.

"HMV is incredibly excited to launch The Vault," Nick Williams, President and CEO of hmv Canada, said in announcing the new service. "Canadians look to us as a trusted source to help them create their own music experience.  The Vault is a natural extension of that commitment."

The Vault is offering a free 2-week trial to everyone who joins; updated information on the service shows there is no time limit on the free trial offer - it will be offered indefinitely, not just at launch.

Users can discover music, build a personal library, create custom playlists and share content through social feeds.  In addition, individual tracks and/or albums can be purchased and downloaded from The Vault Store, hmv's new digital download store.

"The launch of the Vault is a clear indication of hmv Canada's ability to continually evolve to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers,” Williams continued, “while offering them an unparalleled music and entertainment experience.  This is an important investment in the company's future and is another positive step resulting from our acquisition by Hilco in July 2011."

hmv Canada's first store opened in 1986; there’s now 113 stores from Newfoundland to British Columbia, including flagship locations in Toronto, Edmonton, and Montreal. In 2009, hmvdigital.ca launched as a digital music store with over 12 million MP3 tracks for download.
