More than a dozen digital media development projects will receive financial support from the Ontario Government and its on-going Entertainment and Creative Cluster funding program.
Driven by some of the largest media players in the country and the province, the projects extend across media delivery platforms and embrace new strategies for concepts for content creation and media delivery.
The support is designed to encourage new industry collaborations, leverages partnerships and will help strengthen the book and magazine publishing, film and television, music, interactive digital media and commercial theatre industries across the province.
Among the new projects and partners receiving support, the 3D Film Consortium (3D FLIC): Phase 2.
This project picks up on the success of the OMDC funded 3D Film Consortium (3D FLIC) to build the brand, strengthen and extend the network, improve and promote the capacity of Toronto as a first rate center for high quality stereoscopic 3D film
In another project, Corus Entertainment is working with partners at the Mobile Experience Innovation Centre (MEIC), in order to establish MEIC-Net to create a competitive advantage for Ontario's mobile media cluster by offering services and events to better connect key facets of Ontario's mobile media ecosystem.
The Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) with data collected by Re:Sound Music Licensing Company and other industry stakeholders (such as AVLA) want to develop the Canadian Music Database (CMDB), creating a functional and searchable Canadian Music Database.
The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) along with their partners - including broadcaster CTV - will create a feasibility study for a "JUNO Portal" where information about award-winning musicians and performers would be collected and distributed.
Ryerson University is working to develop the Transmedia Production Acceleration Program, in order to provide digital media production training for Ontario-based personnel.
Building capacity, marketing skills, technology innovation and content development through the Entertainment and Creative Cluster Partnerships Fund has helped build employment opportunities, with some 23,000 new jobs since 2003, the province details. Since 2006, the Fund has supported 94 projects involving 576 partners with total budgets of $38.3 million.
"The Partnerships Fund encourages innovation and fosters new business partnerships that encourage growth across Ontario's creative media industries and academic institutions," Karen Thorne-Stone, President & Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Media Development Corporation, said in a statement. "By supporting the cluster, we are helping to ensure that Ontario plays a leading role on the competitive world stage."
