SCTE Salutes Engineering Professionals

Developing technical leaders for the industry, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) announced that Jason Byrd of Suddenlink Communications and Randy Dart of Charter Communications are the first individuals to certify in SCTE’s Engineering Professional programs.

Byrd is the first to earn the SCTE Internet Protocol Engineering Professional (IPEP) certification. Byrd is a regional data engineer with Suddenlink in Greenville, N.C.
SCTE’s IPEP Certification Program debuted last fall and certifies knowledge in the engineering aspects of Internet Protocol systems within the cable telecommunications industry and includes the design, analysis, testing, integration, deployment considerations, and troubleshooting of a variety of IP systems.
Dart is the inaugural achiever of the SCTE Digital Video Engineering Professional (DVEP) certification. An SCTE member since 1989, Dart is network engineer-3, Wisconsin KMA with Charter and resides near La Crosse, Wis.
SCTE’s DVEP Certification Program certifies knowledge in the engineering aspects of digital media (including video, audio, interactive services, and associated data) systems as deployed in the cable telecommunications industry. The scope includes the design, analysis, testing, integration, deployment considerations, and troubleshooting of various digital media systems from the headend to the customer premises.
“SCTE’s DVEP gives newer employees a good foundation in digital video,” said Louise Wasilewski, director, on-demand software, Cox Communications. “The program also is a good way for experienced people to widen their knowledge.”
“SCTE certification provides the ability to learn, hone, and improve knowledge and in a broader sense to show others it was achieved,” said Dart. “I know being certified helps me keep up with the fast pace of this industry.”
“SCTE Certification Programs are the careful handiwork of many devoted volunteer subject matter experts,” said Pam Nobles, SCTE director, professional development. “Congratulations to Jason Byrd and Randy Dart for taking advantage of these programs, demonstrating their engineering professionalism, and setting a fine example that their peers can now emulate.”
Besides IPEP and DVEP, the SCTE Certification Programs menu comprises Broadband Premises Installer (BPI), Broadband Premises Technician (BPT), Broadband Premises Expert (BPE), Broadband Distribution Specialist (BDS), Broadband Transport Specialist (BTS), and Broadband TelecomCenter Specialist (BTCS).
In addition to IPEP, Byrd also is certified in the BDS, BTCS, and BTS programs. Dart, along with DVEP, also is certified in the BDS, BTCS, BTS, BCE®, and BCT® programs. The latter pair of certifications—SCTE’s Broadband Communications Engineer and SCTE’s Broadband Communications Technician—are longstanding and well regarded and will continue to be recognized, but SCTE permanently has closed the two programs to new candidates.
The SCTE Certification Programs are a core component of the broader SCTE Pd (Professional Development) brand of offerings, which include technical online seminars and other valuable technical resources and programs.
